I find it so special to discover a garment that was worn and worked in, well over a hundred years past. This late 19th century work dress is a two piece ensemble, made of a heavy, sturdy cotton calico in pale blue, with blue roses and golden posies. It's a piece that was handmade at home, all the more charming for its imperfections. Made at the end of the 1890s, the bodice is cotton with a white cotton internal lining. The internal cotton closes with thick shell buttons over the printed fabric, which is then hidden when worn by gathered panels. These need to be pinned closed or secured with a sash or belt as shown. (The sash in 1950s, but is the correct size and included as a gift.) The sleeves are full length and slightly puffed at the shoulder. The skirt has a simple button closure on one side, and nearly done tight pleating for fullness on the other. I admit I really thought this was the front, but it turns out the pocket only makes sense when the vented button closure is to the front - this really is made for utilitarian purpose. The front has three rows of ruffles, and the back has a single ruffle and four rows of pleats. It uses on the single button at the waist, and you'll want to have a pin to keep the vent a big more closed.

This piece has been very gently hand laundered and dried flat. I have not used any special stain treatment techniques due to the garment's age. The calico has faded beautifully with time. On the bodice, there is some staining on the inside back of the neck. There is a single rust colored spot on the right front side, midway down, about 2" from the side seam. The skirt has a few more imperfections, but it's still quite solid. On the closure side, there an area on the low far left on about the length of a finger with a subtle soil of speckled reddish dots. On the right, there is an area about the size my hand that has five tiny pinholes, one 1/8" hole, and one 3/8" hole. The center of the bottom ruffle has another hole about 1/2"x 1/4", with a nearby area that some light staining - a couple rusty spots and some soiled appearance. At the far right bottom, there is a part of the hem that was clearly tripped on, and I've sewn down a ragged 2" tear. There is a 1/2" bit missing from the edge of the hem as well. The pleated side has two holes on the back far right - one pinhole and one narrow fray about 1/4" long. It's possible I've missed a tiny spot or a tiny hole somewhere, but it won't be anything significant. I find nothing else to note, and this is a solid, real workdress that has survived quite well considering the kind of use it would have seen.

May I reserve an item or put an item on Layaway?
Yes, and you've got options! Klarna is a service available for all items on Etsy to buyers from some countries. Additionally in-shop layaway is available for items over $100. Items between $100 and 300.00 may be set up on a two part, 30 day layaway. Items over $300 may be put on three part layaway plan, with length determined by value. Items over $1000 may be put on four part plan, typically for 90 days. Layaway cannot be combined with sale prices, coupons or other discounts. Customers may put more than one item on Layaway, but the prices cannot be combined to extend the duration.
There is a 2-hour waiting window on new listings before they may be put on Layaway or Reserve. You may write on a new listing to be put in the layaway queue.
The measurement look larger than the mode/dress form. Is this item pinned?
Yes, it is. All items larger than the form are pinned too represent their accurate fit and shape. We are careful to accurately represent the actual cut of the garment. Don't rely on the size of the model in any way.

I allow returns or exchanges in only rare occasions - only when I have made an egregious error.
You must contact us with 48 hours of receiving your order if you have an issue, and if an exchange is approved, it must be sent within 48 hours after our communication. Items purchased and worn for special events may not be returned - we are not a rental facility. No refunds are issued based on issues with the fit of a garment, please measure carefully and feel free to make inquiries if you need help with sizing.
Vintage lingerie cannot be returned or exchanged, due to its intimate nature. Clearance items, items noted "as-is" and items sold on layaway may not be returned or exchanged.
