I absolutely love the cusp moment of the late 1910s transitioning to the 1920s. This absolute doll of a dress was probably made in 1919 or 1920, and it's really special. The mocha silk is lustrous and soft crepe de chine with not a single hint of dryness. A two piece ensemble, it is homemade (which is absolutely wild with all this permapleating!) and made up of a slip style bodice with attached skirt, and a short sleeve overblouse. The Waist is on the natural waistline but not overly fitted. The slip bodice is an ivory tissue silk, closing with those longer antique hook and eyes, and attaching to the layered silk skirt along the back, closing along the front with hooks and snaps. The skirt has a simple, straight layer, then an apron style front made of two layers of perma pleating, which start a little below the natural waist. Each of the two long tiers is finished seven narrow tiers, each with a banded edge, giving this set a ruffled dimension without being overtly frilly. The blouse is a short sleeve style, and does taper toward the natural waist, but is a longer cut that plays into the soon-to-be-the-rage drop waist, shaped with shirring along the waist and top of the hip. Each of the short sleeves is made up of banded, ruffled pleat tiers. The stand out feature, of course, is the double-sided, three dimensional cluster of gold lamé rosettes, filled with silk in violet, magenta, orange, emerald green and pale blue-grey. This piece slips over the head, closing all along the left side, including the shoulder, with snaps.

This rare set wears beautifully, with silk that is still soft and supple. I have not cleaned the skirt due to the perma pleating, but did gently hand launder and repair the blouse. Both pieces have been ozoned for freshness, although I don't detect any odors. The slip bodice has a few moth holes some mild discoloration, and a patch repair to a 2" tear (not dry rot, but from careless movement!) to the ivory silk just above the waistband on the left side. This is not seen when worn. I've steamed it as carefully as possible to preserve and even crisp up the lines of the pleating, but some have relaxed a bit. Spread out and held to the light, I found two moth chews hidden in the pleats at the front left hip.
The blouse has some mild fade at each underarm, and a subtle spot at bit above the underarm area on the right, both front and back, and on the shoulder. There are two patched breaks to the silk at the top right shoulder, reinforced with silk grosgrain from behind (see last photo) and one similar at the right udnerarms. There are three tiny moth chews at along the hem at right, along with two small pulled fibers in the silk. One side of the bottom rosettes is missing its fill color. I find no other issues to note.

Frequently Asked Questions

May I reserve an item or put an item on Layaway?

Yes, and you've got options! Klarna is a service available for all items on Etsy to buyers from some countries. Additionally in-shop layaway is available for items over $100. Items between $100 and 300.00 may be set up on a two part, 30 day layaway. Items over $300 may be put on three part layaway plan, with length determined by value. Items over $1000 may be put on four part plan, typically for 90 days. Layaway cannot be combined with sale prices, coupons or other discounts. Customers may put more than one item on Layaway, but the prices cannot be combined to extend the duration.

There is a 2-hour waiting window on new listings before they may be put on Layaway or Reserve. You may write on a new listing to be put in the layaway queue.

The measurement look larger than the mode/dress form. Is this item pinned?

Yes, it is. All items larger than the form are pinned too represent their accurate fit and shape. We are careful to accurately represent the actual cut of the garment. Don't rely on the size of the model in any way.

I have an issue, may I return an item?

I allow returns or exchanges in only rare occasions - only when I have made an egregious error.

You must contact us with 48 hours of receiving your order if you have an issue, and if an exchange is approved, it must be sent within 48 hours after our communication. Items purchased and worn for special events may not be returned - we are not a rental facility. No refunds are issued based on issues with the fit of a garment, please measure carefully and feel free to make inquiries if you need help with sizing.

Vintage lingerie cannot be returned or exchanged, due to its intimate nature. Clearance items, items noted "as-is" and items sold on layaway may not be returned or exchanged.

Are Accessories Included?

Only accessories original to the piece and specifically described in the listing are included with purchase. All contrasting belts, necklaces, scarves or other items on mannequins or models are for inspiration only and are not included. All included pieces, including original self-fabric belts will be clearly and explicitly described in the listing.
