RICARDO MONTALBAN Screen Worn Vintage 1950s Embroidered Western Jacket with Mexican Coat of Arms from Sombrero 1953

A fantastic and rare find - this is a screen worn piece, made for Ricardo Montalban for the 1953 film "Sombrero" and worn for the musical number "Eufemia." (Youtube link below.) This is made of a heavy woven cotton in a warm ivory with distinct herringbone weave. It's a stylized piece that closes with wooden toggle buttons and has a tie front waist. The stand out feature, of course, is the incredible rendition of the Mexican coat of arms in chain stitch embroidery - eagle, snake, cactus and rock. The trims - yoke, cuffs, pockets and button placket -are edged in red and green chain stitch. The pockets also feature fruiting prickly pear cacti. This is unlined. A really magnificent piece.

Provenance as known - in private collection for the last dozen or so years following purchase at Avalon Vintage in Portland, Oregon in 2012 or 2013.

Sturdy and wearable, presents very well. I have not had this dry cleaned - I just don't have a dry cleaner I can trust with something this one of a kind, that said, some of these flaws would be easily corrected with preservation based cleaning. There's some soil along the top of the shoulders with foxing, mostly on the top of the left shoulder (shown.) There's some sweat rings, mostly on the right side (shown.) There is a tiny point of red dye bleed at the far right side of the back yoke. There are few moth chews in the embroidery on the left sleeve (shown) and two rust spots and a tiny chew in the embroidery on the left. There is a single small hole under the front right hand pocket (shown). The paint is chipping from the toggle buttons (shown). Overall, it simply has not been cleaned in the last 72 years since being filmed. It still looks fantastic on, and will wear or display well in your collection.

Yes, and you've got options! Klarna is a service available for all items on Etsy to buyers from some countries. Additionally in-shop layaway is available for items over $100. Items between $100 and 300.00 may be set up on a two part, 30 day layaway. Items over $300 may be put on three part layaway plan, with length determined by value. Items over $1000 may be put on four part plan, typically for 90 days. Layaway cannot be combined with sale prices, coupons or other discounts. Customers may put more than one item on Layaway, but the prices cannot be combined to extend the duration.

The measurement look larger than the mode/dress form. Is this item pinned?
Yes, it is. All items larger than the form are pinned too represent their accurate fit and shape. We are careful to accurately represent the actual cut of the garment. Don't rely on the size of the model in any way.
I have an issue, may I return an item?
I allow returns or exchanges in only rare occasions - only when I have made an egregious error.
You must contact us with 48 hours of receiving your order if you have an issue, and if an exchange is approved, it must be sent within 48 hours after our communication. Items purchased and worn for special events may not be returned - we are not a rental facility. No refunds are issued based on issues with the fit of a garment, please measure carefully and feel free to make inquiries if you need help with sizing.
Vintage lingerie cannot be returned or exchanged, due to its intimate nature. Clearance items, items noted "as-is" and items sold on layaway may not be returned or exchanged.
Are Accessories Included?
Only accessories original to the piece and specifically described in the listing are included with purchase.
